(Lewis) The weather forecast for this weekend looks ideal for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources “Free Fishing Weekend,” June 7, June 8, and June 9.
DNR Fisheries Biologist John Lorenzen says no license is required. He says it is a good time for people new to fishing without barriers.
Lorenzen says Free Fishing Weekend is happening right when the Bluegill spawn is in full swing. He says fishing reports are on fire, so get out and fish.
Lorenzen recommends fishing in shallow areas where the beds are visible. He recommends using small jigs tipped with an artificial worm and a piece of nightcrawler on a hook under a bobber. If the water is clear, standing too close to the spawning beds may scare fish away.
