(Atlantic) Democrat Phyllis Stakey and Republican incumbent Bernard Pettinger will square off in the November General Election for the District #5 Board of Supervisor seat in Cass County.
Stakey ran unopposed on the Democratic ticket. Stakey received 44 votes and no write-ins for 100 percent of the vote.
Pettinger, who won the 2020 election, defeated challenger J. Ford Lillard, 85-31, or 73.28 percent. The rural Anita man served on the Hospital Board, as Secretary of the Co-op Board, as a former school board president, as a former fair board president, and as a member of the Extension Council. Pettinger runs on a fiscal responsibility platform and says his role is to listen to the people before deciding.
Democratic challenger Phyllis Stakey describes herself as a lifelong Cass County resident with a history of community involvement. She is running for Cass County Supervisor because she believes it is essential for elected county officials to manage our monetary resources efficiently. She wants to help promote and further develop thriving communities in Cass County.
Phyllis served on the Cass County Hospital Board of Trustees for 18 years as a finance committee member. She also worked as a realtor for 23 years. While serving on the Cass County Board of Review. Phyllis says combining these responsibilities gives her insight into taxation and finance at the personal and county levels. Phyllis points out that she knows how much Cass County has to offer and says she is committed to spending the time and doing the hard work to position the county for long-term success. Phyllis says all county supervisors should be actively engaged in supporting and promoting their communities. Through the years, Phyllis has been active in Cass County tourism, various housing committees, the Massena Historical Society, the Massena Chamber of Commerce, and other community organizations. Phyllis and her husband Jim, a rural mail carrier, raised their three children in Massena. Jim passed away from Alzheimer’s in 2014.
