(Atlantic) Kuemper, Catholic’s tie-breaking nine runs in the top of the seventh inning leads to a 15-8 win over Atlantic in a Hawkeye Ten Conference baseball game at Atlantic on Friday night. The Knights sent 15 batters to the plate in the seventh inning to break a 6-6 tie.
Atlantic Head Coach Nathan Block felt good about how things were going up to that point in the game.
Atlantic jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Xavier Darrow’s single, Gavin McLaren’s sacrifice bunt and Zayden Parker’s RBI base hit and run scored gave the Trojans the early advantage.
The Knights punched one on the board in the top of the third inning on Ethan Loew’s RBI and tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth. Kuemper pitcher Ethan Loew settled in and pitched an immaculate inning in the third with three pitches and three outs and retired the side in the fourth. The offense rewarded Loew for his pitching prowess with four runs in the top of the fifth inning and grabbed a 6-2 lead. The Knights were aided by one walk, two hit batters, and Josh Langel’s single. Credit to Atlantic, they responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame on three hits to knot the game back up at 6-6. Gavin McLaren and Zayden Parker belted hits, followed by Sawyer Tarrell and Jaice Larson’s RBIs.
The Knight’s scoring spree in the top of the seventh pushed the score to 15-6. Despite the large deficit, the Trojans did not give in with two runs, cutting the score to a 15-8 final.
Ethan Loew led Kuemper at the plate with a double an RBI single, and three walks. Evan Loew smacked a single and laced a three RBI double in the seventh inning. Tristan Janson had three hits and two RBI. Aaron McDermott and Josh Langel each added singles.
For Atlantic, Zayden Parker went two for four with one RBI. Sawyer Tarrell and Jaice Larsen each belted RBI singles. Gavin McLaren and Xavier Darrow each hit singles.
The (1-5) Trojans travel to Creston on Monday night for a doubleheader. The 3-4 Knights play in the CYO Baseball Tournament today and host St. Albert on Tuesday.
