(Greenfield) On May 21, 2024, an EF4 Tornado swept through the Adair County City of Greenfield, costing four people their lives and injuring 35 others. The powerful storm leveled homes, destroying trees and some businesses. The storm left a pile of debris, creating unrecognizable neighborhoods. Nine days later, tremendous progress has been made with the cleanup efforts.
Jeremy Cooper, Adair, and Guthrie Counties EMA Director, admits there is still much work ahead of them, but over half of the debris has been cleaned up and hauled away.
Meanwhile, Cooper says they are overwhelmed and deeply grateful for the incredible generosity of the community and beyond. Due to the sheer volume of donations received to support those impacted by the recent tornado, it has exceeded the capacity of its current storage facilities. It is no longer accepting Physical donations other than monetary donations.
Cooper says FEMA came to Greenfield immediately following the storm and is set up to aid residents impacted by the tornado.
Cooper says most of the city’s restaurants were not affected, minus the power outages, and most are back online.
Cooper says monetary donations can be sent to the Greater Greenfield Community Foundation at greenfieldiafoundation.org or dropped off in Greenfield at the Union State Bank or First National Bank. Volunteers can stop by Cardinal Glass from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Larger groups can call at 515-561-3744.
