(Anita, IA) – What looked like a close game between the CAM Cougars and the Glidden-Ralston Wildcats quickly catapulted into a Cougar victory. CAM was able to take a win on Wednesday night by beating Glidden-Ralston 18-3.
While the score above may not give you an idea that this game was close at one point, let’s dive into the first inning. The Wildcats started off on a good note after getting ahold of two singles to start off the top of the order with both Blake Nelson and Johnny Bergmeier. After those two were on, Mark Lensch launched a double to put the Wildcats ahead 2-0. CAM was able to launch back in the bottom of the first with two runs scored off Brayden Chester and Chase Spieker off a couple of miscommunications and balls hit into play by their teammates. They were able to tie things up at 2-2 headed to the top of the second inning.
The second inning of the ballgame didn’t reflect the Wildcats in a good manner after striking out twice and scoring no runs. CAM was on a different page in the second inning with a total of four hits led by Carson McKee, Brayden Chester, Makade Paulsen, and Austin Eblen. This inning featured a total of seven runs on the board and gave CAM a 9-2 lead.
In the third inning, the Wildcats loaded up the bases with just one out, but CAM’s Brody Paulsen was able to get the next two outs and allow no runs scored in the top of the third. For the Cougars, they also left three runners stranded after the third inning after both offenses weren’t able to get off to a start.
Jumping to the fourth inning, CAM’s Brody Paulsen got on base with a walk and the next two batters Lukas James and Makade Paulsen struck out. The Cougars had one heck of a two-out rally to put it lightly. CAM was able to go on and score nine runs in the bottom of the fourth with two outs on the board the entire time. That gave the Cougars an 18-3 victory. Head Coach Drew Ticknor was proud of his boys for capitalizing on the fourth-inning opportunities.
Brody Paulsen started in tonight’s ballgame for his first varsity start of the season and pitched in just a little over two innings and had four strikeouts. Coming in relief was Kayden Winther who had two strikeouts and was able to help push the Cougars to their win.
This Cougars team was able to limit errors in the game with four on the night. While that would be high for the end of the season, it is just the third game of the season and it’s a good place to be for CAM.
CAM still has a few games ahead with one tonight against Stanton and their following game against Ar-We-Va on Friday. Wednesday’s game acts as a great booster for CAM to get more wins down the line.
The Cougars face off against Stanton today, with the opening pitch at 7:30 p.m.
