The Iowa State Patrol says the accident happened at around 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday near the 48.55-mile marker in the westbound lanes on Interstate 80. Authorities say 45-year-old Emma Gonzalez Maldonado, of Lincoln, Nebraska, died in the crash. Emily Elizabeth Esteban, of Lincoln, suffered injuries.
According to the report, a 2021 Freightliner semi-driven by 85-year-old Kenneth Turner of Norman, Indiana, was stopped in the left lane near the 48.55-mile marker due to a previous accident. Maldonado, driving a westbound 2015 Honda Odyssey in the left lane, failed to slow down and struck the semi, causing the car to spin and hit a third vehicle’s trailer.
