(Lewis) The cold and wet weather conditions have not been conducive to garden planting. John Lorenzen, fisheries biologist, discussed gardening on Saturday’s DNR Report on KSOM Radio.
Lorenzen referred to frost date probability tables for directions on when it is safest to plant. For example, in this area, by May 5, there is a 50 percent nighttime temperature that will dip below 32 degrees; by May 4, there is a 40 percent chance of frost; and by May 9, the odds of a frost drop off to 20 percent.
Lorenzen says the chance of frost by May 13th drops to 10 percent. He suggests looking ahead to the forecast to decide if it’s time to seed these vulnerable plants.
