(Atlantic) The Atlantic boys’ tennis team topped Saydel in a quarterfinal match on Saturday in the Substate 7 Tournament and fell short to Shenandoah in the semi-finals.
Doublesplay proved to be the deciding factor for the Trojans against Saydel. The Eagles won four of the six in singles; however, the Trojans bounced back, sweeping doubles for the 5-4 win. For Saydel, Austin Schnell at #1, Jake Buell at #2, Sadler Gruber at #3, and Jacob McPerren at #5 won singles matches. In Doubles, the state-bound duo of Waters/Juhl defeated Schnell/Buell in a battle 6-4, 7-6, (7). The Trojans also picked up wins from Johnson/Woodward (5-7, 6-3, 6-2) and Bennett/O’Hara (6-1,6-1) to keep the Trojans alive in the tourney. But the Trojans ran into a tough Shenandoah and defeated the Trojans 5-0 in the semifinals. The Mustangs take on North Polk on Wednesday in the Substate Finals.
