(Audubon, IA) – The Audubon boys’ tennis season may be coming closer to an end, but they’re not done yet as they’re battling in today’s IHSAA District Singles and Doubles tournament play. This is a team that had to mesh together with experienced talent and raw talent while competing with some of the region’s top schools throughout the regular season. Head Coach Maryssa Soder knows that this season was one of building the foundation of improvements to move this program even farther forward.
Today, the boy’s who are involved in singles play have a chance to move on to Glenwood for the First Round of Substate action. Two athletes in particular are Issac Jackson and Carson Matthews who are 3-6 and 2-1 in match wins this season according to GoBound.
The problem that many young teams face is that they’ll play down to a team’s level when they get into matches. This is not only talking through my experience as a coach but also from the coaching perspective of Coach Soder. Audubon’s goal has not been to play at the opponent’s level, but rather to step up against every team and play above their level.
While the season is coming closer to an end, the boys improved in their technique and knowledge of the game throughout the season. Coach Soder is looking ahead to next year already and is excited to see the younger talent build on the foundation of improvement that the Wheelers have been building all throughout the year.
Audubon is currently at the Dennison Tennis Courts in District play. If a Wheeler advances, they’ll go on to the First Round of Substate play in Glenwood this Saturday, May 11th.
