(Harlan, IA) – It is the week of state-qualifying meets and the Harlan Cyclones have been getting prepared for Thursday’s tough competition. This week is all about fine-tuning their handoffs, block starts, and footwork so when Thursday comes for the Cyclones, they’ll be at their absolute best.
One of the top Cyclones this season has been Cade Sears who has been at the top of his game in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes. He is currently averaging around 10.69 in the 100-meter dash and 21.93 in the 200-meter dash as the top runner in both events. Head Coach Sam Brummer has seen Sears take that next step up which has been an impressive one, as he holds the third-best record in the 100-meter and sits second in the 200-meter, just behind the two top runners at the State Track meet last year.
While Sears continues to work hard, his teammates Franz Reisz, Matthew Sorfonden, and Joseph Bragg have been at the top of their respective events toward the end of the season, just in time for the state-qualifying meet this Thursday. Reisz has thrown around 159’6″ in the discus, Sorfonden has been at 22.57 in the 200-meter, and Bragg has been the top mid-distance runner in the 800-meter at around 2:09.89.
Harlan knew that they would be very sprint-heavy this season, even after losing quite a few of the state’s top runners last season. The boys have already broken the 4×200-meter relay record and have come closer to breaking the 4×100-meter relay record as the season has progressed forward. Their goals remained the same from last year and have only continued to get better throughout the season.
Thursday doesn’t provide an easy walkway to the blue oval for Harlan. They’ll be taking on some of the toughest teams in the area including Atlantic, Carroll, ADM, and others who will provide state-level competition even before the Cyclones get to Des Moines the following week.
Harlan will be traveling to Atlantic for the Class 3A state-qualifying meet this Thursday, May 9th that will start at 4:00 p.m. We will have all the coverage of that meet right on westerniowatoday.com.
