(San Antonio, TX) — The FDA has found signs of the bird flu in milk that was bought at grocery stores, but experts say that’s misleading. Baylor infectious disease expert Dr. Peter Hotez says that pasteurization likely killed the virus and this test is just picking up the remnants.
He says you don’t need to pour your milk down the drain. It’s safe to drink. The bird flu was recently found in some Texas dairy cows. One worker, who had close contact, tested positive, too. But, so far, there have not been any signs that the virus is spreading. The FDA is now ordering that dairy cows be tested before interstate transport.
