(West Des Moines, IA) — This is honey bee “swarm season” – when bee colonies split. Some will cluster in bad spots, like the soffit of your home.
“People will find clouds of bees settling down on their mailboxes, under their deck or in the shrubs in their backyard and that’s when we always appreciate people calling us as beekeepers,” said Julia McGuire with the Des Moines Backyard Beekeepers Club.
McGuire says their club members can scoop the honey bees into a box and relocate them. She says if you see a honey bee swarm, call a local beekeeper within an hour.
“If they’re next to a playground, if there is a swimming pool with a lot of people, we appreciate you calling a beekeeper instead of exterminating,” said McGuire.
