(Atlantic) The Atlantic girls’ track team is off to a terrific start to this young season. The Trojans earned top finishes with 122 points in Harlan on April 4, 104 points for the win in the 9-10 grade meet at Glenwood on April 6, and 150 points on Monday for the win at the Panther Relays in Creston.
Atlantic Head Coach Matt Mullenix says this squad needed the two varsity wins at Harlan and Creston to start the season.
Coach Mullenix is molding this group into a team, stressing competitiveness and the importance of every point. He says it all worked out one week ago when the team came away with a half-point win over two solid teams, Harlan and Treynor, in the eight-team field at Harlan. Mullenix credits the leadership of the upperclassmen for the early-season success.
Another key to the team’s early success is the sprint crew. Coach Mullenix is impressed with their contributions to his squad this season.
Atlantic’s next competition is tonight against a twelve-team field at Glenwood.
Coach Mullenix feels his team has an advantage in the hurdle races. Madison Botos and Jaci Reed have consistently finished at the top this season. Reed earned gold at Harlan in the 100 hurdles and second at Creston. Botos is undefeated, with top finishes in both Harlan and Creston.
The meet starts at 5:00 p.m. at Glenwood today.
