(Griswold, IA) – Matt Spunaugle has announced that he is officially stepping away as head coach of both the cross-country and boy’s basketball teams. He is currently student teaching and preparing to graduate this coming May to officially become a teacher down in Missouri. Spunaugle knows that even though he is leaving, the boy’s basketball and cross-country programs will be in good hands next season with athletes that will work hard through thick and thin.
While at Griswold, he was able to watch the boy’s basketball program progress to its best record since the 2020-21 season and was able to help grow the cross-country program to be able to fill a whole team of boys back in the fall. Talking through experience, Spunaugle knows that coaching is not about the money, but the reward of watching young athletes become the best that they can possibly be.
Coaching two varsity roles, Matt has had so many moments throughout his coaching career that he could not pick just one favorite while at Griswold. These are experiences that he will carry over to the next chapter of his career.
Spunaugle thanks the community, athletes, parents, and administrators for giving him the opportunity to coach at Griswold and wishes the best to all future Tigers.
