(Davenport, IA) — Iowa’s U.S. Senator Joni Ernst will run for the Number three position in Senate Republican leadership.
Ernst confirms to the Quad City Times that she will challenge for the Republican Conference Chair position. She currently holds the Number Four position in the Senate GOP leadership as chair of the Republican Policy Committee. Her candidacy is part of a shake-up after Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell announced he’s stepping down from the GOP Senate leadership.
According to Politico, Senator Ernst will face Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton for the third-highest party leadership position in the next Congress.
A former military officer, the Republican from Red Oak has served as Iowa’s junior U.S. senator since 2015. Before that, she served as the Montgomery County Auditor from 2004 to 2011 and the Iowa State Senate from 2011-2014.
