(Des Moines) Iowa House Representative Tom Moore says in a bipartisan manner, a bill passed through the House to help parents and kids navigate the ever-changing world of social media.
Moore said statistics are showing that as social media has gotten more popular, we’ve seen the mental health of children decline. Social media can also expose children to inappropriate content.
“So, all this does is it makes social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram responsible for making sure they have parental consent signed by parents of kids under 18 years old,” explained Moore. “It’s nothing that is different from what is Federal law right now for anyone under 13; we just moved it from that 13 to 18-year age limit to protect our teenagers.”
Under this bill, it would also be against the law for social media companies to gather data on kids without permission from parents.
