(Ames, IA) – Iowa State’s home winning streak continues to stay alive after the #6 Cyclones were able to defeat #20 BYU 68-63 in a race to the finish. The Cyclones are currently 18-0 in home games this season and sit on a four-game winning streak. Those 18 games tied the school record for the most wins in a season with the 1999-2000 team.
Iowa State was down by double-digits when they hit the locker room at halftime and came out with defensive intensity. The Cyclones were able to bring BYU down to just 23% shooting from the field in the second half. BYU had multiple chances to be able to capture a win but continued to miss shots and went scoreless through the final 4:24 of the game.
The Cyclones were led on the night by Tamin Lipsey who had 19 points and six rebounds while shooting 7-16 from the hardwood. Lipsey also played a pivotal role defensively, with five steals on the night. Right behind Lipsey was Curtis Jones who scored 18 points and snagged two boards. Keshon Gilbert was the last top scorer with eight points, five rebounds, and five assists.
On the other end of the floor, Richie Sanders led BYU on the night with 20 points and three rebounds. Jaxson Robinson had 11 points while shooting 50% from the field.
This win marked T.J. Otzelberger’s 18th AP Top-25 victory. Tamin Lipsey also now owns the second-most steals in a single season at Iowa State. BYU outrebounded Iowa State 45-35, outscored the Cyclones in the paint 28-24, and in bench points 37-22. Iowa State led the way in steals on the night with a total of 10 while BYU had five.
Iowa State will take on Kansas State on Saturday, March 9th when they take on Kansas State in the Big XII regular-season final at 1:00 p.m.
