(Grant) Firefighters from Grant, Elliott, Griswold, Villisca, and Red Oak responded to a grass fire east of Grant on Thursday afternoon.
According to Red Oak Fire Chief John Bruce, the call was initiated at 2:43 p.m. to respond to a grass fire that had spread through a yard and had affected a planter, fifth-wheel camper, and old truck cargo box. The fire also spread to approximately ten bales of forage. The Griswold Fire Department provided mutual aid.
Chief Bruce mentioned that fire crews quickly responded to the incident and were able to stop the fire’s spread to the north, where there were hogs and hog buildings. Firefighters managed to control the blaze at 3:41 p.m. and remained on the scene to conduct salvage/overhaul operations.
The residence experienced a power outage, prompting suspicion that the overhead power lines may have arched and malfunctioned, sparking the fire. The Montgomery County Emergency Management Agency and Montgomery County Communications also assisted firefighters.
