(Des Moines) Iowa lawmakers are asking for the public’s input on the proposal defining “man,” “woman,” and “sex.” Under the bill, Iowans would only be able to use state facilities that match their assigned sex at birth. The proposal would also require government-issued documents and IDs, not including driver’s licenses, to indicate if the person is transgender.
The bill passed out of the Iowa House Education Committee along party lines late Tuesday afternoon, 15-8, with all Democrats on the committee opposed to the bill. The bill was amended, on party lines, to remove requirements that driver’s licenses make the exact delineations during consideration by the whole House Education Committee on Tuesday evening.
Iowa Rep. Sue Steckman, D-Mason City, said the bill was discriminatory toward transgender Iowans.
The House is holding a hearing at the State Capitol at 5 p.m. Monday.
