(Des Moines, IA) — The Iowa Department of Public Safety is defending its investigators over their handling of a college sports betting probe.
The DPS says analytical software used by investigators had been cleared by legal council and two county attorney offices ahead of time, before charges were filed. Fifteen athletes were charged last summer after an investigation in which agents used geofence technology to identify online gambling activity at a University of Iowa dormitory.
DPS says, “We believe the evidence was obtained in a constitutionally permissible manner. Ultimately it is up to the courts to decide. We want to reassure Iowans that the Department always strives to scrupulously uphold the laws and constitutions of the United States and the State of Iowa.”
