(Glenwood) GameChanger youth sports app announced this week the “2023 GameChanger of the Year” award recipient posthumously to Officer Christopher Abbott of Glenwood, a former police officer for the Bellevue, Nebraska Police Department, for celebrating his exceptional contributions to the community through selfless service and dedication.
According to the press release, Officer Abbott served on the Glenwood Baseball Softball Club’s board for four years and ran their fundraising and uniform efforts, raising over $30,000 to improve club facilities. He worked around the clock to transform the funds into a new softball field. He also constructed new dugouts, coordinated the build-out of custom benches, and helped develop another field specifically for the Tee Ball through 9U divisions.
Officer Abbott’s legacy goes beyond the tangible improvements he brought to Glenwood; he was a true hero who saved lives and faced personal injury in the line of duty. Despite the grief his family, friends, and the community felt, Officer Abbott’s impact will forever be remembered and cherished.
Officer Abbott worked tirelessly to ensure that every Glenwood child, regardless of financial means or abilities, had the opportunity to play baseball or softball. He collaborated with the City of Glenwood to open a brand-new concession and restroom facility in 2023, addressing the need for amenities at several fields within the ballpark. His efforts even led to including a playground for players’ siblings!
“We are honored to name Officer Christopher Abbott the posthumous recipient of the 2023 GameChanger of the Year award,” said GameChanger President Sameer Ahuja.“Officer Abbott’s efforts to elevate youth sports in Glenwood will greatly benefit young athletes in the community for years to come. His accomplishments echo our belief that youth sports change lives on and off the field and serve as a powerful reminder of the enduring impact one person can have on others. His memory will live on forever through the smiles and achievements of the athletes he inspired.”
GameChanger will present Officer Abbott’s family with the “GameChanger of the Year” award later this spring.
