Shirley Beth Frizzell, the daughter of Bert and Nellie (Peck) Bates, was born July 12, 1938, in Council Bluffs, IA. Shirley died January 18, 2023, at Risen Son Christian Village, in Council Bluffs, IA, at the age of 85 years, 6 months, and 6 days.
Shirley lived in Council Bluffs for several years before moving to Oakland. She attended school at Oakland, graduating from Oakland High School with the class of 1956. After graduating, she worked at the ISU Extension Office for several years. On September 5, 1959, she was united to Gordon Frizzell at the Atlantic United Methodist Church. Three children were born to this union: Kathi, Debbie, and Jamie. Shirley began working at Oakland High School as the secretary for the principal in 1977. She retired in June of 2001. Shirley lived in Oakland until several years ago when she moved to Council Bluffs.
Shirley was a member of the Oakland United Methodist Church. She liked cooking, and everyone loved her brownies, fried chicken, and potato salad. She enjoyed traveling and taking family vacations. She especially loved spending time with her family and friends.
Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, and her siblings: Robert, Evelyn, Anabelle, Jimmy, Juanita, Floyd, Dick, Duane, and Donnie.
She is survived by her husband Gordon of Council Bluffs, IA; her children: Kathi Sharp and husband Dean of Council Bluffs, IA, Debbie Simonin and husband David of Council Bluffs, IA, and Jamie Frizzell and wife Rebecca of Anamosa, IA; her grandchildren: Rachel Urbank and husband Brandon, Megan Schmidt and husband JP, Jon Simonin and wife Melissa, Matt Sharp and fiancée Elly, Shelby Simonin and fiancé Scott, and Madison Sharp; her great grandchildren: Bella, Landon, Daniel, Malia, Kai, and Thomas; her sister Bonnie Allen; her brother Norman Bates and wife Carole; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 25, 2024, at 11:00 AM, at the Oakland United Methodist Church. Interment will be in the Oaklawn Cemetery at Oakland. Visitation with the family will be held at the Oakland United Methodist Church one hour prior the funeral service. Rieken Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland is assisting the family with arrangements.
