(Des Moines) A proposal at the Iowa Legislature would ban students from using cell phones at school, with a few exceptions.
The Iowa House bill would require school boards to make policies banning students from the device during the day unless allowed by a teacher, required by law, or in use for a specific educational purpose. Students would need a designated space to store phones, such as a student’s locker, and other ways for parents and guardians to contact students during the school day.
It would also require schools to establish a method for parents to contact students readily during the day. The proposal has yet to see a committee or debate.
The bill has not been reviewed or debated by the Iowa Legislature.
