(Lewis) The bitterly cold temperatures laid down a nice layer of ice in most southwest Iowa lakes and ponds. Lewis Bruce, Southwest Iowa Research Biologist for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, says most lakes are eight plus inches thick.
Lewis Bruce says ice fishermen are catching nice-sized bluegills, a few fish in the campground arm at Lake Anita, and having luck at Prairie Rose. Bruce says first ice is usually the best time to get out and fish.
He says the key to catching fish through the ice is using small baits, light gear, and a 2-4lb test line with small jigs tipped with wax worms or minnows.
Lewis Bruce says wearing ice cleats and picks is essential, and tell someone where you will be fishing and when you plan to be home. He adds it is always best to ice fish in pairs.
