(Des Moines) The National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory for all of western Iowa from noon today through 6:00 a.m. on Friday.
Forecasters say snow will spread across the area this afternoon and evening before tapering off overnight. This snow will be dry, fluffy, and highly susceptible to blowing and drifting as northwest winds increase tonight into early Friday. Northwest winds may gust from
25 to 35 mph tonight. Any blowing snow will result in reduced visibility and dangerous driving conditions. The bitter cold will return with wind chills later tonight and Friday morning in the 20s below zero.
Plan on slippery road conditions. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact the commutes this evening and Friday morning. The cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.
