(Des Moines) Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird is filing a lawsuit against TikTok, accusing the app of misleading parents about containing inappropriate content and evading parental blocks by incorrectly rating the social media site for kids 12 years and older.
Bird declared the lawsuit Wednesday, saying TikTok ignores Iowa’s Consumer Fraud Act. Bird says the app shows sexual content, nudity, profanity, and other intense adult content. She says the social media company has 60 days to respond to the lawsuit.
Bird also said in the suit that TikTok “wrongfully rated its app 12 plus” and misled how often “harmful content” appears, which she says violated App Store guidelines.
The lawsuit seeks an order for TikTok to cease its deceptive, misleading, false, and unfair statements and conduct” related to its content and a $40,000 fine per violation
