(Washington D.C.) With the second session of the 118th Congress approaching and California’s Proposition 12 now in effect, Iowa U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley is renewing his push for federal legislation to protect hog farmers in Iowa and nationwide.
Grassley says Iowa is the top pork producer in the United States. California imports most pork, accounting for 13 percent of its total pork consumption.
Senator Grassley says California’s move to impose burdensome standards on pork sales, regardless of the state where the pig is raised, aims to hike consumer costs and threaten producers’ market opportunities and bottom lines.
The Grassley-backed Exposing Agricultural Trade Suppression (EATS) Act prohibits state and local governments from interfering with agricultural production nationwide while preserving their ability to regulate farming and ranching within their jurisdictions.
