(Des Moines) State Climatologist Dr. Justin Glisan says the dry conditions are becoming more alarming as Iowa enters its 178th straight week of record drought.
Glisan says this is the longest drought since the beginning of record keeping in 2000. Glisan says we had more prolonged droughts in the 1970s and 1950s, and its drought is also somewhat different from the droughts of 1988 and 2012.
Glisan says he is concerned about going into the next growing season with the tank empty in terms of soil moisture.
Dr. Glisan says the saving grace may be the El Nino in place that historically brings more precipitation chances.
