(Avoca, IA) – The AHSTW girl’s basketball team is preparing these next few days for their first game of the season. AHSTW has lost their second-best scorer from last season Ellie Peterson, but are returning the rest of the squad. Head coach Jason McCall has been proud of his team in the offseason to get better overall during the summer, and is ready to see the girls take the floor.
The key to success this season is defense. With that defense comes an expectation that the players need to be on the same page for the defense to flow properly. Defense is something that takes the team as a whole and the Lady Vikes need to have good communication with one another to get to the level that Coach McCall is looking for the team to be at.
This may be the season of underclassmen this year. Halle Goodman, Ava Paulsen, and Makenna Paulsen have all stepped up in the offseason and in these first two weeks of practice. Last season, both Ava and Makenna didn’t have much playing time and have only worked to get more playing time as Goodman hadn’t even recorded a varsity stat last season. The freshman class has also been stepping up as of late, with Bella Lamp, Kendra Hansen, Macey Goshorn, and Addison Carroll all competing to the top of their level.
AHSTW has an upcoming game against Woodbine this Monday, November 20th, a team that AHSTW has not beaten since 2020. Regardless of the history, the Lady Vikes are coming into this game with four seniors to help lead the way with the younger talent. This team is ready to get at Woodbine and is ready to play some high-intensity basketball.
The Lady Vikes are preparing for their season opener against Woodbine this upcoming Monday at 7:30 p.m. Their home opener will be on November 28th against Riverside which will be broadcast live on KSOM 96.5 and streaming live on Western Iowa Today.
