(Washington, DC) — Iowa had the highest jump in the annual infant mortality rate. A new CDC report shows the rate in Iowa rose from 3.99 to 5.2–a 30-percent increase that leads the nation. Infant mortality measures how many babies die before their first birthday per thousand live births. In Iowa in 2022 that number was 147. On X, Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley says he’s working to pass a Healthy Moms and Babies Act to reduce the rate.
