(Atlantic) The Atlantic School Board discussed numerous topics at Wednesday’s work session. One of them was offering an early retirement incentive plan. Atlantic Schools Superintendent Dr. Beth Johnsen noted it has been five years since the district offered this incentive.
Johnsen says this is a cost-saving outline for the district.
Dr. Johnsen brought this topic to the board, and if approved, there are timelines. The proposal would be sent to all staff members; a deadline for those who qualify to submit their request for early retirement, and so many days after the application is turned in to change their mind.
The early retirement incentive plan was a discussion item only, and the board will decide on this at a future meeting.
Meanwhile, Dr. Johnsen says the administration is considering adding more staff. She says the level 2 and level 3 student population has increased, and a larger first-grade class next year. Dr. Johnsen would like to bring back a director of student services position. There are 90 to 100 children in the preschool.
The board also discussed offering the Aviation Program to students outside the district, a small park east of the tennis courts at the high school, and converting a locker room at Schuler Elementary into a middle school wrestling room. The board took no action at this time.
