(Anita, IA) – Things came down to the wire late in the CAM and Exira-EHK volleyball match. The Spartans had continued to keep up with the pace of the Cougars all night long as they continued in a back-and-forth performance. It all came down to 20-20. CAM was already leading 1-0 in sets, but Exira-EHK only lost the first set 25-22. After a timeout called by the Cougars, they began to pounce, they were able to knock in a few serves while the Spartans added on a field of strategic defensive plays to come back. Fortunately for the Cougars, it made for a CAM win as they beat the Spartans 25-22 once again for a 2-0 match win. Coach McDonald was trying to catch her breath after the end of the nail-biter of a contest.
Going further into the CAM Cougars, they were able to win the Triangular and sweep both teams as they won all four sets that they played and now sit at a 4-4 record on the season. They had a very impressive libero of Meredith Rich who not only continued to be successful in the serving game, but in the passing game as well. Another player who was impressive was Eva Steffensen as she was not only consistent in the front row but also came back to play defense and really gave it her all in both matches. Jenna Platt came into the tournament ready to hustle and ready to play as she continued to hit out of the outside with success and confidence on the night. Meredith Rich also stepped into a setting role as the senior and was able to successfully take her team all the way to the end in one of the hardest positions on the floor.
Looking ahead, CAM will travel to Coon Rapids-Bayard to compete in the Crudaser Tournament on Saturday and the Cougars are already looking ahead for what’s next.
Exira-EHK also earned their first win of the season against East Union as the Eagles were swept by both Exira-EHK and CAM in the triangular. The Spartans came into the night 0-2 and earned their first win and a loss that they may want back against CAM. The Spartans had an impressive player in Jaelynn Petersen, a hard-hitting middle hitter and tough server who battled the entire match against the Cougars. Mayne Jorensen came into the game ready to play as she played great defensively and from the outside as she was consistent and agile on the strong side. One other player who was impressive was Taryn Petersen as the freshman stepped into a setting role in the first match against East Union and wasn’t consistent. She came into the second match and became a more confident player who moved around the floor well. Coach Derek Reischauer has a great team on his hands that has a record that does not define them. The Spartans will battle against Coon Rapids-Bayard on September 7th.
The East Union Eagles had a good back row player Avery Staver as she was getting just about every ball on the floor and was taking all the serves on the night. One other player who had an impressive night was Haley Willett. The sophomore hit out of the middle and continued to try to keep her team in the game overall, and is a smart hitter in the front row. East Union will take on Central Decatur in their next contest on September 5th.
