(San Francisco, CA) — Scientists may have figured out why some people don’t get COVID symptoms. A new study published in Nature found that a common gene mutation could be the answer. The mutation triggers a quick and effective immune response, almost as if the body knows how to fight the virus even if it’s never been exposed before. Researchers analyzed 14-hundred people who tested positive for the virus and discovered that people with the gene variant were eight-times more likely to be asymptomatic. Co-author and University of California professor Jill Hollenbach says this is essentially what vaccines are designed to accomplish. She added that researchers could use this information to develop a new drug or vaccine that focuses on preventing COVID symptoms.
