(Ames, IA) – Iowa State Hall-of-Famer Dedric Willoughby, died yesterday at the age of 49. He was playing pickup basketball near his home in Atlanta. Willoughby was on Iowa State’s most successful teams in 1995-96 earning first-team honors and lead the team in scoring with 20.5 points per game in 1995-96 and 18.9 points per game in 1996-97.
Dedric earned many awards such as Big-Eight Newcomer of the Year and was Second Team All-American by Basketball Times in 1997. He also is the first player in Cyclone history to score over 1,000 points in just two seasons at Iowa State.
Willoughby played in the NBA from 1999-2000 for the Chicago Bulls in which he averaged 7.6 points per game in his only season in the NBA. He was named to Iowa State’s All-Century men’s basketball team in 2008 and the Cyclone Hall of Fame in 2012.
