(Atlantic) Dr. Beth Johnsen, Atlantic’s new Superintendent of Schools, thanked everyone for allowing her to join the school district. She officially took over the position on July 1 and attended her first school board meeting on Wednesday.
“All the people I have met so far have been wonderful,” stated Johnsen. “I cannot say enough good things, and I hope they represent the school district and the community.”
Johnsen says her focus is on the three school board priorities. The first is academic excellence. “I have had the opportunity to meet with the key communicators in the district,” said Johnsen. “I connected with some of the summer staff; I am learning and listening to everything about the Atlantic Community School District. I had the opportunity to be involved in hiring staff, and that was fun.”
Johnsen says another focus is looking at ways to improve the culture within the district. She is addressing this issue by communicating and networking with people. “As the new superintendent, I need to develop trust and work to gain that trust from others,” stated Johnsen. “I also want to learn more about Atlantic, so as I work with everyone, I will grow and gain that trust.”
Dr. Johnsen says the third priority is district operations, learning about the district, working with staff, and asking questions. “One of the things we are working on is the district’s security, safety practices, and protocols: We will upgrade the antiquated security cameras at Washington Elementary.”
Johnsen mentioned she had the opportunity to be a part of hiring new staff. The School Board approved those hires. Laurie Fell, Elementary Teacher; Jordan Zarbano, High School Custodian; Jennifer Weisenborn, Washington Elementary P.E. Teacher; Julie Van Maanen, Schuler Title 1 teacher; and Steve Andersen, Transportation Director.
