(Wiota) The Wiota sesquicentennial celebration on Saturday drew people from all ages, in, out of town, and out of State.
The Sesquicentennial Celebration Committee, Wiota Boosters, and Volunteer Fire Department began planning the event nearly a year ago. The day started with a breakfast, flea market, tractor ride, opening of the Heritage Museum, food trucks, parade, and a program recognizing the Royalty of Wiota.
Julie Plowman organized the ceremony honoring all Wiota High School graduates, 80 years of age and older, dating back to the final graduating class in 1961.
Plowman says she looked forward to opening mail daily and seeing who returned the questionnaire.
The coronation of the King and Queen followed the introductions and biographies of the many Wiota High School graduates on or before 1961.
The crowns presented to the oldest attendees went to 100-year-old Helen Coughlin Morrison and 90-year-old Dave Hancock.
The digging of the time capsule followed the coronation.
The evening activities included the Wiota Firemen’s dinner and music in the park.
