(Harlan) The Harlan City Council Tuesday evening approved changes to the Constitution of the Harlan Fire Department in Article VIII, Section 2. This relates to the residency requirements to be on the Fire Department.
Harlan Fire Chief Roger Bissen said they have always had a residency requirement to be on the Fire Department. He said years ago it stated you must live in the city limits to be on the department, then it changed to two miles outside of the city limits, and a few years after that they went to five miles with the stipulation that the member has to live within the fire district. Bissen said it’s getting harder and harder to find people to volunteer, so they are completely taking the residency requirement out.
Bissen said they are currently sitting at 24 members on the Department. He said they are taking other steps to recruit and they are always looking for somebody that would be willing to serve their community.
