(Area) Drought conditions are affecting some lakes in Iowa more than others.
Bryan Hayes, Fisheries Biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, said most of the state park lakes like Lake Anita, Viking Lake and Prairie Rose have a dam, a watershed and a seal in the bottom with clay soil.
On the flip side, Hayes said there are lakes that might be constructed on the flood plain by the river and maintained by the water table, like Cocklin Fish Farm near Griswold.
Hayes noted that the river flows are also lower than normal. He said there are resources on the Iowa DNR website to help you plan trips down the river. He said go to “Things to Do” and under “Canoeing and Kayaking” and you will find how to paddle, where to paddle and maps and brochures to plan out your trip.
