(Kimballton) 8th grade pitcher Riley Miller won her varsity debut for Exira-EHK. The Spartans defeated Coon Rapids-Bayard 11-5 at home on Monday.
Miller struck out six batters. She gave up two walks and allowed six hits. Exira-EHK posted 11 runs despite managing only two hits. Shay Burmeister had a two run double in the 4th inning and Hannah Nelson struck a single in the 6th.The Spartans had three walks each from Quinn Grubbs and Taryn Petersen. Burmeister, Gemini Goodwin, and Harlee Fahn each walked twice.
Two errors including an overthrow back to pitcher allowed Coon Rapids-Bayard to score a pair of runs in the first. Anna Hart also doubled down the right field line as the visitors took a 2-0 advantage. Exira-EHK scored 4 in the 2nd and never trailed again. Coach Andrea Schwery’s squad posted 4 more runs in the 3rd to extend the lead to 8-2. Riley Miller and Brooklyn Flathers each drove in one run in the win.
The Spartan defense improved as the game wore on. Petersen turned a double play in the 4th inning when she snagged a line drive at third base and quickly threw to first. A 2-3-5 twin killing was turned in after a 7th inning bunt to bring the game to an end.
Exira-EHK is 1-0 on the season moving into a road date with Ar-We-Va on Wednesday. 0-1 Coon Rapids-Bayard will face Madrid next.
