(Avoca) An AHSTW graduate is continuing his football career.
Michael Shiffer played one season at Morningside and now a member of the Omaha Stockmen. “It’s a semi-pro team that has been together for about nine years. They signed me on a rookie contract this year for my first year. It’s cool playing with this team. A whole bunch people that have played Division I or different levels. Some guys have even been up to professional indoor or even NFL level.”
The head coach and owner of the Stockmen is a former Morningside assistant. “When I got out of the Marine Corps back in October I was looking for something to do and I reached out to a couple of teams. He got back to me and knew a little about me. He talked to a couple of the coaches up at Morningside. It was a team I was able to go on and had to show I could play at to earn a spot on the team.”
He’s passionate about the game and hopes playing semi-pro could lead to other opportunities. “With me being younger I’m trying to see if I could get tryouts at the next level if that’s newer leagues like the USFL or XFL or even see if I could get in with indoor teams like the Iowa Barnstormers or Omaha Beef.”
Shiffer says the team picked up a preseason win last weekend. The regular season kicks off this weekend and runs through July.
