(Guthrie Center) On Thursday the ACGC boys track team will compete at Griswold.
The Chargers got their feet wet with an outdoor meet at Earlham on Tuesday. They sent a partial lineup to the Cardinal Early Bird due to the school’s Washington DC Trip. “It’s a great opportunity for kids that probably wouldn’t get as much of an opportunity to compete because of the depth of some our events. We had a lot of freshmen that got a great opportunity to get out there in multiple events. They get that taste and feel of competing in a varsity meet and hopefully that propels them.”
Some highlights from Earlham included Lance Bunde winning the high jump at 6-00. He also placed 4th in the 100 and 8th in the 200. Payton Jacobe threw the shot 45-06.25 to take 2nd. Andrew Mahaffey was 4th in the 3200. Mike Fuller placed 4th in the discus. Gavin Sloss, Joe Crawford, Jarrett McClain, and Justin Reinhart teamed up for a 3rd place finish in the 4X800.
They’ll have the same personnel available for Griswold on Thursday, but will make some changes to the meet lineup. “We are going to move some kids that ran in relays and put them in open events to see what they run. Weather looks cooperative with a high of 65 and low of 57. We haven’t had that nice of a day in quite some time.”
This is a Charger team that has a lot of strengths. “We are very strong in the field events right now. We can score some points and come out of field events with 30 plus points if we compete to the potential our kids have.” Matthewson adds they have some elite sprinters and elite long distance kids.
