(Anita) The CAM boys return a strong golf team this spring.
Coach Joe Wollum believes his group is capable of competing for a Rolling Valley Conference title. “We’re excited on the boys side to compete for a conference championship. Last year we made it to districts and hopefully we can improve on that finish as well. We are led by sophomore Chase Jahde who had a great freshman season and then senior Seth Hensley. Those two put up our lowest scores.”
The supporting cast is very capable as well. “Bradyn Bohnsack, Carson Cary, Gavin Jessen, some guys like Lukas James can fill a varsity spot. We are excited.”
Jahde quickly made a name for himself last year with a dynamite freshman season. His 18-hole average was in the top 15 for Class 1A. “Individually obviously he wants to be at the state tournament and bring home a medal for sure and maybe even loftier than that. He’s a kid that could have a season where he might not shoot in the 40’s. He could stay in the 30’s all year. I really believe he’s capable of that. A very good golfer physically and mentally. He knows his way around the course and I’m really impressed by how mature he is with his golf game.”
The team has 14 boys on the roster and just two girls. Reese Snyder leads the girls team, joined by Abby Tibken. “Reese was a state qualifier as a sophomore and missed out just barely as a junior. We are hopeful we can get her back to the state tournament. Another senior came out this year, Abby Tibken. She comes from a golfing family. Her brother Ben was a state qualifier for us. She has some raw talent and I think she can really improve.”
Early on they are placing a priority on the short game. “We spend a lot of time with our short game. Chipping and putting. You can save a lot of strokes if you can be a sound chipper and putter. That’s where we start. Then when it gets nicer out we can let them rip it and hit the driver.”
Coach Wollum says Boyer Valley, Coon Rapids-Bayard, and Exira-EHK will all give his boys team some good competition in the conference.
