(Audubon) Audubon State Bank Vice President Steve Shaffer has been announced as the winner of the Audubon Citizen of the Year Award. Shaffer was recognized during Celebrate Audubon on Saturday night.
Shaffer admits it was a surprise to hear his name called. “Shocked. Speechless too. I got up in front of everybody and didn’t have a thing to say for about five or ten seconds. For people that know me that’s kind of amazing.”
He’s happy to have been involved with a number of different activities. They include, but aren’t limited to the movie theater, boy scouts, and hosting RAGBRAI which he refers to as very gratifying. “The community gives me my livelihood. I’m able to take care of my family and the things that we have. We’ve been really truly blessed for that. I’ve been here at times when the community has its ups and downs and it’s been a resurgence for a lot of things here.”
He’s also been on the board of the Friendship Home and helped with the library. “It really just kind of makes a person feel really thankful and honored. Really thankful to the good lord that I’m able to be a part of this thing. It’s really quite an honor. I’ve seen people that I’ve had so much respect for over the years that are recipients and now I get to be included in that. It’s really humbling and I’m really grateful for it.”
Shaffer considers the award to be more about the opportunities than it is about him.
