(Greenfield) Iowa House District #23 Representative Ray Sorensen has assigned a group of bills to the Economic Growth and Technology Committee members, and those subcommittees are going on now.
Sorensen says a few bills out of full committee include CySim, or the Cybersecurity Simulation bill, that would appropriate state funds to build a cyber-Sports Complex and Training Center to run through scenario-based exercises to prepare workforces of today and the future.
Sorensen says House File #3 aims to ensure Iowa’s welfare programs remain available for eligible Iowans. It does this through various means, including codifying practices to authenticate the identity of applicants and verify the information before enrollment. “I’ve heard some concern about the list of foods available to be purchased using SNAP benefits in the bill’s original draft,” said Sorensen. “I’ve been assured that the list in the bill’s original draft was only meant as a starting point, and changes are being made in committee. That’s what the subcommittee and committee process is for.”
Sorensen says SNAP is meant to be the “supplemental nutrition assistance program,” and the legislature would like to emphasize the nutrition aspect of these taxpayer funds. He says if the Iowa legislature receives federal approval on this change, the state will provide a $1 million appropriation to support additional purchases of fruits and vegetables.
