(Atlantic) The Atlantic girls’ basketball team extends their record to (14-4) and remains in the hunt in the Hawkeye Ten with a 48-35 win over St. Albert on Friday night at Atlantic. The Saintes fall to (15-3) and (7-20 in conference play.
Atlantic Head Coach Dan Vargason says team defense and inside game keyed the team’s success.
The Saintes opened up a 10-5 lead in the first quarter sparked by Lily Krohn’s five points, but the lead was short-lived. Atlantic answered with a 6-0 run to the end of the quarter.
The Trojans kept the momentum in the second frame outscoring the Saintes 16-7. Jada Jensen fueled the offense with eight second-quarter points, and the Trojans took a 27-17 lead into the locker room at the half.
St. Albert turned the tables in the third quarter, outscored Atlantic 13-6, and trimmed the home team’s lead to 33-32 at the end of three quarters.
It appeared the Saintes would get over the hump when Ella Klusman knocked down a three-point basket early in the fourth quarter to vault the Saintes to a 35-33 lead. It did not take the Trojans long to respond. Maddie Huddleson countered with a long-range shot leapfrogging the Trojans back into the lead, 36-35. Huddleson’s bomb started a 15-0 run leading to the Trojans’ 48-35 win.
Three players scored in double-figures for the Trojans. Jada Jensen led the Trojans with 12 -points, Maddie Huddleson and Paytn Harter scored 11 points, Aubrey Guyer, 8, Claire Pellett, 4, and Keira Olson chipped in 2.
Missy Evezic led the Saintes with 12-points; Lilly Krohn, 7; Ella Klusman, 6; Avah Underwood, 5; Lena Rosloniec and Molly Wise, 2, and Ellie Monahan chipped in one.
Atlantic travels to Red Oak on Tuesday night. St. Albert matches up against Council Bluffs, Abraham Lincoln, on Saturday night.
