Dorothy Elizabeth Myers, the daughter of Louis and Grace (Harris) Rock, was born September 15, 1929, on the family farm in Avoca, IA. Dorothy passed away January 22, 2023 at the Northcrest Living Center in Council Bluffs, IA, at the age of 93 years, 4 months, and 7 days.
Dorothy attended school in Avoca, graduating from Avoca High School with the class of 1948. While in School, Dorothy was very involved with Rainbow (Worthy Advisor), was a four year letter winner in basketball as a post forward, took an art class by mail, and was on the publication staff. While growing up on the family farm, she helped with many chores, including milking cows, gardening, and canning. On May 6, 1949, she was united in marriage to Wayne Allen Myers in Council Bluffs, IA. Dorothy was baptized at the Oakland Christian Church on April 3, 1958.
Dorothy was a member of the TCM Mother’s Club, the Oakland Saddle Club, and had served on the Oakland School Board for six years. In Ames, IA, on December 2, 1966, she won the state ladies division in the “Make It Yourself With Wool Contest’, entering her plaid coat. Dorothy was a 4-H leader for ten years, received a 4-H Lifetime Achievement Award, and was also inducted into the 4-H Hall of Fame on August 22, 2010, for East Pottawattamie County. In 1982, she designed the Iowa State flower wild rose costume for Melanie Myers, the Miss Iowa in the Miss America Pageant in Las Vegas. That costume is currently in the Oakland Museum. Dorothy loved gardening and canning. In 1989, she won a contest growing a four-pound tomato. The winning was printed in Country Magazine. Dorothy had also taken painting classes from Inge Chase in Council Bluffs and has had a letter published in the Congressional Record by Congressman Bill Shirley.
Dorothy’s hobbies included reading, writing poetry and stories, ice skating, bowling, and was an avid golfer. She had collected over on hundred four leaf clovers. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, cooking and baking for her family.
She is preceded in death by her parents Louis and Grace; her husband Wayne on September 4, 2003; her two brothers, Kenneth and David; three sisters: Alice, Lorna, and Patricia; and two sons, Richard and Joseph; sister-in-law Lois; brothers-in-law: Charles, Bill, and Paul; and son-in-law Terry.
She is survived by her four children: Patty, Bob, Sherry, and Michael; ten grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; eight great great-grandchildren; sisters-in-laws, Carol Wilson and Marilyn Randels; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 4, 2023, at 11:00 AM, at the Oakland Christian Church. The memorial service will be livestreamed on the Rieken Vieth Funeral Home Facebook page. Visitation with the family will take place one hour prior to the memorial service. Interment will be in Belknap Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be given to East Pottawattamie 4-H. Rieken Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland is assisting the family.
