(Anita) CAM went toe-to-toe with perennial power Exira-EHK earlier this season, but lost by a 62-58. The Cougar girls basketball team will get a chance at redemption Friday night.
10-4 CAM travels to 12-2 Exira-EHK in a game that will air on KSOM. Coach Joe Wollum’s team has been patiently awaiting this rematch. “Absolutely. We definitely felt like that first game at our place we kind of let the game slip away from us. After the game I told the girls that they didn’t beat us, we beat ourselves. We look forward to that revenge and going up there to try and play a good game. We are going to have our hands full. They are a good team. Everybody all year has talked about how much they’ve lost, but coach Tom Petersen has coached up those girls and they are a doggone pretty good team.”
Eva Steffensen is averaging team highs in points with 19.1 and rebounds with 7.7 per game, plus several others have contributed in a big way. “Kiera Nichols has been pretty steady for us all year. She’s had a couple of breakout games where she has been in the 20’s. Hopefully we’ll get a big night out of her on Friday. Meredith Rich went into Christmas Break on a shooting slump, but she’s gotten herself out of that. Meredith is playing with a little big more confidence. Reese Snyder, I think she’s playing at a high level too. Probably the best basketball she has played of her career.”
CAM will face an Exira-EHK team that averages 62 points per game. “All of them can shoot the ball, so we have to get out on them. If you over extend on them they can take it to the hole. They can shoot and they are all good passers and can find the open girl and hurt you that way. You have to play sound defense and can’t give them second chances. They are also very good in transition so you can’t give them any turnovers that can lead to fast break points.”
