(Neola) Tri-Center pays Audubon a visit on Friday in a basketball doubleheader that will air on KSOM. The Trojan girls are 6-6 on the year.
Despite a couple of close losses recently, coach Derek Sonderland believes the team is making solid progress. “Our kids are battling. Our win-loss record doesn’t always reflect the improvement that we are making. Happy with the strides we are making. We are continuing to get better and that’s the main thing we are asking.”
This will be Tri-Center’s second meeting against Audubon this year. They prevailed 47-36 in the previous matchup. “I thought we were able to get out and score in transition. That was key for us. I thought we blocked out fairly well. We were able to get some easy looks which played in our favor. Coach (Darran) Miller has done a good job and made some adjustments. They forced us to shoot over a high hand.”
Taylor Kenkel and Alexis Flaharty are Tri-Center’s top two scorers. They each average 8 points per game. “They are both very capable of putting some points on the board if they are in the right place on the floor and ready to shoot the ball. They’ve done a nice job when they are open of looking for their shot and knocking them down. That’s a credit to how we are getting them open and credit to their teammates.”
Coach Sonderland says blocking out and playing physical along with taking better care of the basketball are some priorities for Tri-Center down the stretch. Pregame on KSOM Friday night starts at around 5:45. The girls game tips at 6:00, followed by the boys matchup.
