(Atlantic) Atlantic High School Athletic Director Andy Mitchell spoke at this week’s school board meeting on how the Iowa High School Athletic Association proposes classifying sports.
Football is the only sport under the proposal to include a socioeconomic factor in separating teams into classes. Member schools started voting this week on the proposal to reduce 40 percent of a school’s free or reduced lunch count from their annual enrollment to determine their classification.
Mitchell says the classifications are based on a school’s bed counts. He says football is a two-year cycle, and a new cycle is due next school year.
Mitchell says they have looked at this proposal from many angles, and he does not think it will affect the Atlantic School District in any way. He says there is a good chance Atlantic will stay in the 3A Classification regardless of how the vote turns out.
The measure must pass by a majority vote from member Iowa school districts. If the proposal passes, it will also have to pass through the Iowa Department of Education.
