Memorial service for 96-year-old Ethel Schlueter of Atlantic will be held at 11:00 a.m., with a visitation one hour prior, on Tuesday, November 15, 2022, at Zion Lutheran Church, with Rev. Kyle McBee officiating. A luncheon will be held following the service in the church’s fellowship hall. The interment will take place at Atlantic Cemetery.
Born July 19, 1926, to Edwin and Rose Rodekohr in Battle Creek, NE. Ethel attended Lutheran Parochial School in Battle Creek, NE. Graduating with the class of 1944. Ethel attended nurses’ training at Lincoln General Hospital, graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1947. In 1948 she married high school classmate Leland Dale Schlueter. To this marriage, seven children were born. Dennis, Sharol, Gail, Ross, Lonn, Lisa, and Traci. After several years of moving with Leland’s job at Swift & Co., the family made their final home in Atlantic in 1965. Ethel was employed at Cass County Memorial Hospital until her retirement in 1991. She had a fulfilling and giving life. She attended all her children’s and grandchildren’s many sporting activities. Ethel was strong in her faith. Attending Zion Lutheran Church, where she was active in bible study, Zion Ladies Aide, and Prayer Shawl Committee. She was a member of the University of Nebraska RN Association.
She provided treats for Zion Little Lambs and Kids Come First programs for numerous years. She was always canning fruits and vegetables from their big garden. Her grandkids will remember her for her monster cookies, always in the freezer. She was an avid reader and loved Iowa State Cyclones and Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball. She would listen to Ed Podolak on the radio and watch the game on TV with the sound turned down simultaneously.
Ethel was proceeded in death by her parents, her husband Leland Schlueter, daughter Lisa Schlueter in 2003, and two brothers and one sister.
Survivors include three sons, Dennis Schlueter of Marne, IA., Ross (Nancy) Schlueter of Atlantic, IA., Lonn (Sandy) Schlueter of Anita, IA. Three daughters, Sharol McCutcheon of Harlan, IA., Gail Schlueter of Denison, IA., Traci Schlueter of Atlantic, IA., son-in-law Leo Mincks of Ankeny, IA. 16 grandchildren, and 30 great-grandchildren, and Numerous nieces and nephews.
Services are handled with the Schmidt Family Funeral Home of Atlantic, IA.
